Taking a Look at the Final 12 Teams in the CCL Playoffs Players and fans were treated to some incredible Call of Duty, as the top 32 college teams in North America battled it out in the first weekend of the CCL Playoffs. Numerous upsets and close matchups highlighted the first few rounds of playoffs, with 20 teams already eliminated after just two days of action. So let’s take a look at the playoff journey of each team in the top 12 and what’s next for them: #1 Concord Maroon WR1: #1 Concord Maroon (3) vs #32 Oklahoma State (0) WR2: #1 Concord Maroon (3) vs #15 Arizona State (2) Up Next: vs #10 Illini Orange Concord had a big scare very early on, dropping their first two maps of the season to the heavy underdog ASU and barely hanging on to win. #2 Texas A&M Maroon WR1: #2 TAMU (3) vs #30 St. Clair College (0) WR2: #2 TAMU (3) vs #19 Grand Canyon (0) Up Next: vs #6 Purdue University The undisputed #1 team all year long rolled through their first two opponents and will look to do the same against a tougher opponent in Purdue. #3 Humber College WR1: #3 Humber College (3) vs #29 University of Arkansas (1) WR2: #3 Humber College (3) vs #18 Lebanon Valley College (1) Up Next: vs #9 Penn State White The Hawks continue their ridiculous series win streak of 37, but perhaps those two map losses is some cause for concern with a very hot PSU coming up. #4 Georgia Southern University WR1: #4 Georgia Southern (3) vs #31 Penn State Blue (0) WR2: #4 Georgia Southern (3) vs #13 Carleton (1) Up Next: vs #11 LA Tech With another strong showing, GSU are proving they deserve to be considered a top 4 team, and are destined for a top 6 finish at the very minimum. #5 Full Sail University WR1: #5 Full Sail (3) vs #26 RIT (0) WR2: #5 Full Sail (1) vs #9 Penn State White (3) LR2: #5 Full Sail (3) vs #16 Bowling Green State (1) LR3: #5 Full Sail (3) vs #18 Lebanon Valley (0) Up Next: Loser of #1 Concord Maroon vs #10 Illini Orange The first of the top five teams to be sent down to the losers bracket after a disappointing effort against PSU White. They are more than capable of making a run, but they will need to get rid of their jitters in order to continue on. #6 Purdue University WR1: #6 Purdue (3) vs #25 UT Arlington (1) WR2: #6 Purdue (3) vs #12 Grossmont CC (1) Up Next: vs #2 TAMU Although they were one of the highly touted teams coming out of the Midwest, the concern is if they are capable of beating a top four team. They have their biggest test of the entire season up next. #7 University of Texas at Dallas WR1: #7 UTD (3) vs #28 Butler (0) WR2: #7 UTD (0) vs #10 Illini Orange (3) LR2: #7 UTD (3) vs #20 Mississippi State (2) LR3: #7 UTD (3) vs #8 Rutgers Scarlet (2) Up Next: Loser of #3 Humber vs #9 Penn State White Many had UTD as a lock to match up against Concord for a spot in the top 6, but an extremely underwhelming performance against Illini Orange bumped them into the LB early on. After two straight game fives (one against a bottom half team), the fan favorites are looking very questionable as they await their next opponent. #9 Penn State University White WR1: #9 PSU White (3) vs #21 UT Knoxville (0) WR2: #9 PSU White (3) vs #5 Full Sail (1) Up Next: vs #3 Humber College PSU came into these playoffs as a quiet dark horse, and with a massive win against Full Sail, they’ve proven they can make some noise. With the way the bracket currently sits, Penn State has a very good chance at cracking the top 4 if they continue their terrific play. #10 Illinois University Orange WR1: #10 Illini Orange (3) vs #23 Oregon (2) WR2: #10 Illini Orange (3) vs #7 UT Dallas (0) Up Next: vs #1 Concord Maroon They had a rough start to their playoff campaign against one of the lower seeded teams, but quickly bounced back with a convincing victory over UTD. Illini will now prepare for a Concord team that just dropped their first two maps of the season. Does anyone smell upset? #11 Louisiana Tech University WR1: #11 LA Tech (3) vs #24 Maryland (0) WR2: #11 LA Tech (3) vs #27 Louisiana Lafayette (0) Up Next: vs #4 Georgia Southern LA Tech caught a massive break with their second round opponent when 27th seeded ULL took down the 8th seeded Rutgers Scarlet, in what was by far the biggest upset of the weekend. LA Tech will face their first real competition of the playoffs against a very tough opponent. #13 Tespa Carleton WR1: #13 Carleton (3) vs #20 Mississippi State (0) WR2: #13 Carleton (1) vs #4 Georgia Southern (3) LR2: #13 Carleton (3) vs #23 Oregon (0) LR3: #13 Carleton (3) vs #27 Louisiana Lafayette (1) Up Next: Loser of #2 TAMU Maroon vs #6 Purdue It appeared that Carleton ran into a brick wall in the matchup against GSU. However, a relatively easy couple of matches in the LB helped them gain some momentum back. They’ll be playing a very, very tough team in the next series. #14 Alabama University WR1: #14 Alabama (0) vs #18 Lebanon Valley (3) LR1: #14 Alabama (3) vs #29 Arkansas (1) LR2: #14 Alabama (3) vs #12 Grossmont (1) LR3: #14 Alabama (3) vs #21 UT Knoxville (0) Up Next: Loser of #4 Georgia Southern vs #11 LA Tech The Crimson Tide got dumped into the losers bracket right out of the gate and were looking very shaky. They did bounce back and have made a very nice run through the LB, while also knocking out #12 Grossmont in the process. Assuming LA Tech is their next opponent, Alabama has a great chance of securing a top eight finish. So only 12 remain. Each of these teams have grinded since January to get to this point, and now it’s time to show everyone what they’ve got. Playoffs will resume Friday, May 15th and Saturday, May 16th. Don’t miss the incredible action to see who’ll become kings of College Call of Duty!
