12.21.2024 // By: Zarin Bartholomew

The Fall semester of the College CoD League featured two, three-day tournaments with some of the best teams the CCL has to offer. The inaugural Search and Destroy tournament in November saw defending CCL champions Fisher College take home the title. The community also saw the household name of the St. Clair Saints secure the victory in the variant tournament held from December 6-8.

Game 7 Showdown in Variant Grand Finals

California State University - Northridge and St. Clair College met in the grand finals of the CCL variant tournament. The two teams traded maps back and forth in the best-of 7, with St. Clair ultimately coming out on top with a 6-1 win. These two teams have squared off in back-to-back CCL playoff matches, both of which went to game 5. CSUN continues to impress against strong opponents. On the other side, the Saints flexed their roster depth, utilizing their coach, and Gorilla, a returning player in January, most known for placing Top 8 in the Vanguard season.

Newer Faces Looking to Make a Name for Themselves

The CCL variant featured many teams that may not always see the limelight, as well as completely new schools entering the league. Three teams in particular stood out amongst the rest. California State University - Dominguez Hills went on a very impressive run all the way to the top 4. They finished with a 4-2 record, and perhaps are just a few more reps away from competing to be the best in California. Nebraska came off of a relatively successful season last year in the Midwest, and certainly built on it with a third-place finish. Their run from loser's round 3 set them up for a 3-1 win over CSUDH to earn them a chunk of the $1500 prize pool. Finally, Marshall fell short of a podium finish, but some impressive performances may have made them a team to watch out for. Led by former Concord player Paraylxsis, Marshall University could be a team on the cusp of taking the next step come January.
