CCL MW KICKOFF TOURNEY RECAP

11.21.2019 // By: Trevor Ivey

CollegeCoD’s first Modern Warfare tournament happened this past weekend with a 5v5 variant tournament. The modes played were hardpoint, a gamemode where teams fight over an area on the map that gives one point every second their team is on the point and the area rotates to a new point every minute and first team to two-hundred-and-fifty points wins, search and destroy, a gamemode where each player only has one life and one team is trying to defend two bombsites and the other team is trying to plant the bomb and protect the bomb once planted and the first team to win six rounds wins the game, and the last gamemode played is domination, a gamemode consisting of three flags placed on the maps, marked A, B, and C, and each flag owned gives a point every five seconds with two six minute halves. The tournament was a single elimination best-of-five tournament with the gamemodes going hardpoint, search and destroy, domination, and then hardpoint and search and destroy if necessary, and saw 18 teams compete. The first streamed match was Lou & Co. (a team consisting of JustifyCM, Lou, ArK, Quantic, and Tweeq) versus Concord University (a team consisting of Paraylxsis, Hawkcules, Crooked, mid_toast, and Benecy.) The hardpoint was played on Gun Runner and saw Concord come out swinging early to take a hundred point lead over Lou & Co. at one point before Lou & Co. started to fight back but it was too little too late as Concord won the first game 250-176. The second match of search and destroy was played on Hackney Yard and Lou & Co. started out well taking a 5-1 lead including a round where JustifyCM got a 1v2 with a beautiful kill onto Benecy Clip but Concord came crawling back into the game to force a deciding round 11 but Lou & Co. were able to read Concord’s play that round and won the round to tie the series 1-1. The next game of domination was also played on Hackney Yard where like game one, Concord did well early to take a 35 point lead at one point in the first half, but Lou & Co. did well and were able to take the lead at the end of the first half 106-103 which set us up for the second half. Again in the second half, Concord did well in the beginning taking two of the three flags to get about a 15 point lead, but Lou & Co. fought back again successfully taking back the B flag and holding two flags to retake the lead and were able to hold it until the end and win 210-207 to take a 2-1 series lead in Lou & Co.’s favor. The series went to the game 4 hardpoint on Ahzir Cave that was a close game throughout its entirety and saw the teams tied 231-231 late in the game, but Concord was able to overwhelm Lou & Co. on the point and won the game 250-237 to force a game 5 search and destroy on Rammaza. In the game, Lou & Co. took a 4-2 lead but dropped four straight rounds to win the series 3-2. While this game was going on, other games going on included Arizona St. 3-0ing Eastern Greyhounds, UTA Esports 3-0ing Berkely, Penn St. Blue 3-0ing Marquette University, Mississippi St. 3-0ing RMU, La. Tech 3-0ing Japo & Co., UMD 3-0ing Purdue, and Liberty Navy 3-0ing Choppaz & Co. The next streamed game was between UMD (LilYalc11, cdub, ThanatosIAm, Lose, and Legendarhy) and Liberty Navy (jerryfalwelljr, Ash, M3NTAL, GRUNK, and Fish.) The first match of hardpoint was played on St. Petrograd and was a close match through the entirety but ultimately saw UMD close out the game 250-227. The next match was search and destroy on gun runner that saw the two teams trading rounds back and forth through its entirety and ultimately saw a round 11, which thanks to UMD’s early plant forcing Liberty Navy to have to make a 5v5 retake of a site, saw UMD winning the round 11 to take a 2-0 series lead. The next match was domination on Rammaza and UMD played really well throughout the entire first half to take a 131-79 lead at halftime. UMD kept their foot on the pedal and didn’t let up in the second half to win the game 227-192 and win the series 3-0, though the series was much closer than the result shows. Other games that went on while the game was being streamed included Concord 3-0ing Penn St. White and Illini Esports 3-1ing Mississippi St. The next game that was streamed was Concord (Megatron subbed in for mid_toast vs. Arizona St. (Effectini, FLASHYCS, iHypeHD, gaudfather, and Kembi) and started with hardpoint on Ahzir Cave. Concord took early control and never let up winning 250-161. The next match of search and destroy took place on Arklov Peak, where the game started off close with Concord winning 3-2, but Benecy was able to get a three piece with his MP5 and Concord rode the momentum to win 6-4. Clip The third map was Rammaza where the teams played domination, and Concord took the early lead and were able to hold it, winning 115-93 at halftime and finish off Arizona St. 217-196 and win the series 3-0. While that game was going on, Penn St. Blue won their series against Penn St. Blue 3-1, La Tech beat Illinois 3-2, and UMD won their series over Liberty Navy 3-2 as well. The next series we saw was La Tech (Will, Dropz, SageModeTorres, GuantanamoBacon, and WholeTroll) go against UMD. In the hardpoint on Gun Runner, UMD started out with a 62-25 lead against La Tech, but La Tech fought back and went on an 80-8 run to take a 105-70 lead. After that, UMD fought back and it was close throughout the rest of the game except the last hill where UMD had a great defense on their hardpoint and won 250-211 to take a 1-0 series lead. The next map was search and destroy on Gun Runner as well, where the teams fought back and forth winning round after round or two rounds each but it ultimately came down to a round 11 where like UMD’s game against Liberty Navy, they planted early and forced a 5v5 retake and were able to win the round to take a 2-0 series lead. The next map was domination on Rammaza where UMD showed exactly that, domination. They won the first half 125-80, where they kept the pressure on La Tech the whole time, including this turn on and cap by GuantanamoBacon. Clip They kept it going into the second half and won 229-184 to win the series 3-0 to advance to the grand finals where they would play Concord University, who just 3-0d Penn St. Blue. The grand finals started with hardpoint on Gun Runner where Concord started off well, taking a 61-18 lead at one point, but UMD went on a 94-28 run to take a 112-89 lead and then both teams fought to keep it close throughout the rest of the game until the end when UMD was able to go on a 52-12 run to win the game 250-208 and take a 1-0 series lead. The series then went to a search and destroy on Gun Runner again, where Concord started off winning three rounds in a row to take a 3-0 lead, but Legendarhy was able to clutch a 1v2 to win UMD their first round. Clip Concord went up 5-2 at one point, but UMD fought their way to win two more rounds before Concord ultimately won their final round and tied the series 1-1. The series then went to domination on Rammaza where UMD won the first round 118-83, but Concord fought their way back in the second half and won the game 208-202 to take a 2-1 series lead. The next match was hardpoint on St. Petrograd and Concord showed how dominant they can be and won the match 250-93, and won the series 3-1 to win the tournament. Congratulations again to Concord University for winning the first CCL Modern Warfare tournament.
